Welcome to Goshuin Atlas. We are committed to protecting your personal information and your right to privacy. If you have any questions or concerns about this privacy notice, or our practices with regards to your personal information, please contact us at support@goshuinatlas.com.

1. Information We Collect

As Goshuin Atlas is designed with privacy at its core, we collect minimal information:

1.1 Information for Users Without Accounts

  • Non-Personal Information: We may collect non-personal information about your use of the app, such as app version, device type (e.g., iPhone X, iPad Pro), and iOS version. This data is anonymized and used to improve app performance and user experience.
  • Optional Analytics: If you provide consent through Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework, we may collect anonymized analytics data regarding app usage patterns (e.g., frequently used features, session duration). This data helps us understand how users interact with the app and identify areas for improvement. You can opt-out of this at any time in the app settings or your device settings.

All your goshuin collection data is stored locally on your device using SwiftData and is not transmitted to us or any third party.

1.2 Information When You Create an Account

If you choose to create a Goshuin Atlas account to access cloud features, social features, or contribute photos, we collect:

  • Email/Password Authentication: Your email address and encrypted password (we never store passwords in plain text)
  • Sign in with Apple: Your name (if you choose to share it), email address (real or private relay), and a unique Apple user identifier
  • Sign in with Google: Your name, email address, profile photo, and a unique Google user identifier
  • Sign in with Facebook: Your name, email address, profile photo, and a unique Facebook user identifier
  • Profile Information: Optional username, display name, bio, and profile photo you choose to provide

1.3 Biometric Authentication Data

If you enable Face ID or Touch ID for quick sign-in:

  • Your biometric data (fingerprint or face scan) never leaves your device and is never transmitted to our servers
  • We only store your authentication credentials (encrypted) locally on your device, protected by Apple's Secure Enclave
  • Biometric authentication uses Apple's built-in security framework and follows Apple's strict privacy guidelines
  • We have no access to your biometric information

1.4 Location Data

When you grant location permissions, we collect and use location data to provide features:

  • "When in Use" Permission: Your current GPS coordinates are used to show nearby temples, provide directions, and enable location-based search. This data is processed locally on your device and not stored on our servers.
  • "Always Allow" Permission (Optional): If you enable proximity notifications, we use iOS background location monitoring (geofencing) to alert you when approaching temples. Your precise location is processed by iOS's region monitoring system and not continuously tracked or stored.
  • Location Metadata: When you contribute photos, we may collect approximate location metadata (city/prefecture level) if included in the photo's EXIF data and if you choose to share it. You can disable this in settings.

Important: We do not sell or share your location data with third parties. Location data is used solely to provide app features and improve your experience.

1.5 Device & Notification Tokens

If you enable push notifications, we collect:

  • Your device's push notification token (provided by Apple)
  • Your notification preferences (which types of notifications you've enabled)
  • Notification delivery status (whether notifications were successfully delivered)

This data is necessary to send you proximity alerts and app updates. You can revoke notification permission at any time through iOS Settings.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

2.1 Core App Features

  • To provide, operate, and maintain our app
  • To show you nearby temples based on your location
  • To provide accurate directions to temples and shrines
  • To enable location-based search and filtering
  • To sync your data across devices (if you enable iCloud or cloud sync)

2.2 Notifications & Alerts

  • To send you temple proximity notifications (if enabled)

  • To deliver notifications you've explicitly requested

2.3 Premium Features

  • To process and manage your subscription
  • To provide access to premium features
  • To handle billing and payment processing (through Apple)

2.4 Improvement & Development

  • To improve, personalize, and expand our app
  • To understand and analyze how you use our app (anonymized analytics)
  • To develop new products, services, features, and functionality
  • To identify and fix bugs, crashes, and performance issues

2.5 Support & Security

  • For troubleshooting and technical support
  • To detect, prevent, and address fraud or security issues

3. Data Storage and Security

All your personal goshuin collection data, saved temples, and recently viewed items are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. This data is not accessible to us and is protected by your device's security measures. We implement smart caching for optimal performance, which also relies on local storage.

Any anonymized analytics data collected (with your consent) is processed by reputable third-party analytics providers who are compliant with industry-standard data protection practices.

3.1 iCloud Sync

If you enable iCloud sync (premium feature):

  • Certain app data is stored in your private iCloud account using Apple's CloudKit framework
  • This data is encrypted in transit and at rest by Apple's iCloud infrastructure
  • We do not have access to data stored in your iCloud account
  • iCloud data is governed by Apple's iCloud Terms and Privacy Policy
  • You can disable iCloud sync at any time; data will remain on your local device

3.2 Error Monitoring

To maintain app stability and fix crashes, we use error tracking services that may collect:

  • Crash reports and stack traces
  • Device model and OS version
  • App version and state at time of error
  • Anonymized user identifier

This data is used solely for debugging and does not include personally identifiable information. Error reports are automatically collected but contain no user content.

4. Third-Party Services

Goshuin Atlas uses the following third-party services:

4.1 Authentication Providers

When you sign in using a third-party authentication service, that provider may collect and process data according to their own privacy policies:

  • Sign in with Apple: Apple's privacy policy applies. Learn more at apple.com/legal/privacy. Apple allows you to hide your email address using their Private Email Relay service.
  • Sign in with Google: Google's privacy policy applies. Learn more at policies.google.com/privacy. You can manage your Google account permissions at any time.
  • Sign in with Facebook: Facebook's privacy policy applies. Learn more at facebook.com/privacy/policy. You can manage your Facebook app permissions at any time.
  • Apple iCloud: If you enable iCloud sync, Apple's CloudKit service stores and syncs your data. Learn more at apple.com/legal/privacy. Your iCloud data is private to your Apple account and not accessible to us.

We only receive the information you authorize these services to share with us. We do not have access to your social media accounts or any information beyond what you explicitly authorize.

4.2 Map Services

  • Map Services: To provide directions, we integrate with Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, and other mapping applications installed on your device. When you request directions, your current location (if location services are enabled) and destination are passed to your chosen map application. Their use of this information is governed by their respective privacy policies.

4.3 Content Services

  • Wikimedia Commons: High-quality images for temples and goshuin are sourced from Wikimedia Commons. No personal data is shared with Wikimedia Commons through your use of our app.
  • YouTube: We use YouTube's embedded player to display video content. When you watch YouTube videos through our app, YouTube may collect data according to their privacy policy. For more information, please review the Google Privacy Policy.

5. Your Data Rights

Since all your primary goshuin data is stored locally on your device, you have full control over it. You can manage, edit, or delete your data directly within the app. If you delete the app, this local data will also be removed from your device (unless you have device backups).

For any optional analytics data, you can withdraw your consent at any time via the app settings or your device's privacy settings.

6. Account Deletion

If you create a Goshuin Atlas account and later decide to delete it, here's what happens to your data:

Personal Data Deleted

The following personal information will be permanently removed from our servers:

  • Your profile information (username, display name, bio, avatar)
  • Your email address and authentication credentials
  • Your private check-ins, collections, and activity history
  • Your saved temples and preferences stored in the cloud
  • Any connections between your account and your contributed content

Community Contributions Anonymized

Photos you uploaded to help the community (temple photos, goshuin images) remain visible to other users but are anonymized, meaning they are no longer linked to your identity. This approach:

  • Preserves valuable educational and cultural resources for the community
  • Protects your privacy by removing all personal connections to the content
  • Complies with GDPR Article 17(3)(e) public interest exceptions
  • Follows industry standards used by platforms like Reddit, Stack Overflow, and Wikipedia

Anonymized content no longer qualifies as "personal data" under GDPR and CCPA regulations, as it cannot be used to identify you.

Local Data on Your Device

Data stored locally on your device (your goshuincho collections, personal goshuin photos, offline temple data, and check-in history) remains accessible after account deletion. This local data is separate from your cloud account and is only removed when you:

  • Delete the Goshuin Atlas app from your device
  • Reset your device to factory settings
  • Manually clear app data through iOS settings

This means you can continue using Goshuin Atlas offline with all your local data even after deleting your account. You simply won't have access to cloud sync or social features.

Your Rights

Under GDPR and CCPA, you have the right to:

  • Request deletion of specific contributed photos before account deletion by contacting support@goshuinatlas.com
  • Download your data before deletion through our data export feature (GDPR Article 20 - Data Portability)
  • Request information about what data we hold about you (GDPR Article 15 - Right of Access)
  • Request removal of anonymized contributions by providing sufficient details to identify the content (subject to verification)

Data Export Before Deletion

Before deleting your account, we strongly recommend exporting your data. You can do this through the app's settings under "Export Personal Data." This will provide you with a complete copy of:

  • Your profile information
  • Your check-ins and activity history
  • Your goshuin collection metadata
  • A list of photos you contributed
  • All other personal data we hold

7. Children's Privacy

Goshuin Atlas is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information without parental consent, we will take steps to remove such information.

8. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
